How to connect ChatGPT to your company's data

There are three ways to get your company's data into ChatGPT — and they're not equal. Here's what each one does, and where the governance gap is.

There are three ways to connect ChatGPT to your company's data: upload files into a chat, use ChatGPT's built-in connectors and Company Knowledge, or put a governed context layer between ChatGPT and your sources over MCP. The first is per-chat and ungoverned; the second is convenient but lives inside OpenAI; the third keeps your data in your control and works across every AI client, not just ChatGPT.

The three options, briefly

  • File upload. Drop a document into a chat. Fine for one question; the context is gone next session and nobody's governing what was shared.
  • Company Knowledge / connectors. ChatGPT can connect to tools like Google Drive and surface company answers. Convenient — but your knowledge and its governance live inside OpenAI, and it only helps inside ChatGPT.
  • A context layer over MCP. A service holds your company's knowledge and serves it to ChatGPT — and to Claude, Cursor, or any MCP client — with citations and permissions you control.

The governance gap most teams miss

The hard part isn't getting data into ChatGPT — it's controlling what it can see and proving what it saw. Upload-and-chat and one-off connectors give you neither: no sensitivity filtering, no citation you can trust, no record of what was retrieved.

  • Sensitivity. Restricted documents should be excluded from retrieval by classification — not left to whoever pastes them.
  • Citations. Every answer should point back to its source, so you can tell fact from improvisation.
  • Audit. You should be able to show who asked, what was read, and what came back.

Does ChatGPT support MCP yet?+
